Starship Log: 014

Finished cleanup today, just in time too. Took soup again for lunch though. Tomorrow we should be back to blissful boring routine… on the other side of the kick.

Got off shift a quarter early. Drifted around the observation room. Shohs is beautiful from this distance. This may be the last we see of it; The last we’ll see of home for a long time in any case; Unless the kick fails of course. The orange and pink blend together into a brilliant point of light, backed by the stars and Hommel’s Nebula. There really isn’t anything like open space. Still a bit creepy though. Like being caught too deep.

Tomorrow we’ll be in a new system. New clouds, new storms, and of course new equipment malfunctions. After scrubbing decks, I’m really looking forward to it!

Cleanup is almost finished. Probably one more day. I’ve been taking soup for lunch instead of real meal breaks. At least our suits come with feeding tubes. We’ve started going through a purge cycle in the lock to clean up after duty. A lot faster than manually cleaning the suits.

Got a note a few days ago that my lunch in arbor A was canceled manually. Apparently someone was there after all. He sent me a note today, Don, a life support guy. He wanted to know how I liked the arbor, and if I took lunch there often. I told him I hadn’t gotten a chance yet.

I also got a note from Bernard in engineering. He wanted to know what I’d been using their little toy for, and didn’t I know it was just a gag gift? Apparently they included a use logger in their “gag gift”. Man, don’t I feel special now. Haven’t responded yet.

The maintenance a-tor notified me that “all crew members must submit personal logs every day”. He sent it right at midnight too. Clearly a routine. No believability delay either.

Hey, Dirk, if you’re reading this, review your automated disciplinary routines! At least put a false time-stamp on them!

So, here’s my personal log for today: Spent work cleaning because Dirk won’t authorize a vac purge. Re-breather needs maintenance. Scrubber needs maintenance. One more day of this.

No entry for today’s date.

Peter has been neglecting his duties.

Woke up today to a mercilessly scheduled alarm. Duties begin at normal hours, so I had to get up early for my post e-action checkout. Cathy was busy and only gave me a polite nod in passing. Daryl did my checkout. A few pretty bad bruises, but nothing is broken. I needed a couple patches too. On the up side it seems I’ve been having a neural imbalance recently, so that’s fixed too. Feel better than I have since takeoff.

U-deck is coated with coolants. Most of the coolants are volatile, so purging to vac should clean it up pretty well. But the deck spec doesn’t support prolonged purges, and it would mean doing a complete sweep beforehand for loose equipment. In the end we decided to clean up manually with local scrubbers. Looks like I’ll be up to my belly in atomized thrust fluid for the next two days.

Major coolant burst today just as the second push ended. Had to skip meals to get it under control. Minor injuries, but nothing too bad. Need to get checked by medical in the morning. Utility deck is going to be a mess for a few days. Tired, going to sleep.

Turns out food can only be delivered to public areas. I scheduled my lunch tomorrow at peripheral arbor A. Hopefully no one else will be there.

Smooth going during shift. Cleaned and organized my tools a bit and had time left over to schedule some planned shut-down requests for the next A-tor meeting. I’ve requested a deactivation of all thermal dump units in atmosphere scrubbing for the engineering quarters section. If it goes through those scribblers will bake in their own beds for a week while I update the routine maintenance records. Serves them right.

On the up side it turns out that “improved” 0-Gee wrench is just the right size to crimp a temporary coolant junction. I should get a promotion for being so clever. Got it in my field kit right now.

We’ll be doing a push tonight. Hopefully I can sleep through it.

Recieved an intra-ship delivery (why are they even labeled “intra-ship”? We’re on our way to kick-point on an out of system mission! Are there delivery ships chasing us down with the toothbrushes that the quartermaster forgot?) today from engineering. Seems they’ve wasted some precious time on the fabbers making a prototype “improved 0-Gee wrench”. This one is even worse than before! For one thing it’s impossible to hold on to. It’s also half off of standard grip diameters, so it won’t grip anything. They’ve included a lengthy and imbecilic set of instructions. Stuff like “grip with teeth and hold on to something” as if that would work. Maybe it’s a joke; Some kind of stupid engineer joke; Which isn’t funny.

As expected, we had to fiddle with the power distribution nodes after those impromptu changes. With any luck we’ll ONLY have to fiddle with them the rest of the mission. Without luck, we might all die in our sleep. Stupid engineers.

Lunch with Cathy again. She was annoying as usual, I’m surprised they let so many un-interesting and self-absorbed people onboard. Don’t they do Psych screening? I should probably file a report with Psych-Med, just in case.

Briefing came through for the power distribution updates. Supposed to fix a fluke that flight team noticed on systems checkout. Looks like it could work, but blueprints don’t prove anything. If all goes well this will be the last I hear of it.

I screwed up my courage and sat with Cathy at lunch. We talked about the a-tors and possible duty segregation once we reach E-four; Alien atmosphere and all that. She’d like to seg for professional reasons, but would miss her friends in other regions. Found the conversation rather dull actually, should probably look into meal delivery at my quarters.

Oh, the maintenance a-tor sent me a disciplinary warning about attempting un-authorized access to the drive nodes. Must be a flag on some of the locks. I wonder if he has a routine running his disciplinary notifications. I know I would. Too bad, was looking forward to investigating more locks. Perhaps vessel non-critical zones won’t be flagged?

Got curious when I went to do the drive node tuning. Used my crew ID instead of maintenance for access. The lock said “I don’t know what you’re doing here, and neither do you.” Got me wondering about lock contingencies again, so I went roaming postshift. Unauthorized quarters have pretty normal responses. “These are not your quarters.” Medical lets anyone in, so I talked to the staffers. Cathy wasn’t on shift (Couldn’t remember her name and asked for Carol… embarrassing). All their equipment was working fine, and they have their own maintenance crew anyhow.

Wandered up into life support. Most had standard refusals, but one said “You’re not wearing a p-suit. You don’t want access.” Would be funny if it wasn’t sobering. Auxiliary air scrubbers are organic, and aren’t locked. Looks like an a-tor decided the place should double as a lounge. Kind of nice, even with the sludge tubes on the walls. No one there though, feels more like a processing plant than a party place. Found the arbors too, but got called back for mess. Only got a peek but looked cool. Will have to check back later.
